How Does It Work?

Simply select your Xpress Water Test from our Test Menu – upon receipt of your order we will send you a test kit with complete instructions and a prepaid return shipping label. Just collect your water sample, pack it back up, and return it to us. We will send your detailed report in an easy to understand format to you via email.

Will my report give only color coding – I want to know my actual numerical results!

As scientists, we know the importance of data to you. Your Xpress Water Test report will include the fully detailed results from your individual water sample, not just color-coding. We provide the colors in addition to the data to give you a way to easily have a quick glance friendly means to locate problem areas in your drinking water. Then, when you are ready, delve into the details of the numbers and the relevant EPA limits – it’s all in there.

Do I have to do anything with the paperwork you sent?

With each sample collection kit, we include important paperwork, including your Test Order and return shipping instructions. Please ensure that you review the Test Order, complete the sections highlighted in either red or yellow, depending on the document type, and send that back with your sample to the laboratory. Review the return shipping instructions before you collect your sample so you can plan your collection properly and ensure the sample reaches us in good time.

I have a section on my Test Order called Sample Type and am unsure what Finished and Raw mean – What do I check in that section?

If your water is from a public water supply (often called city water or municipal water), then it is Finished – just check that box. If your water comes from a private well and it passes through a filter or water softener before it reaches the faucet from which you are collecting your sample then it is also considered Finished – just check that box. If your water comes from a private well and it doesn’t pass through any filter or softener prior to the faucet you are sampling from, then it is Raw – check that box.

What is a reporting limit and what does that mean to me?

For every test we conduct on your water, there is the lowest level that our instruments can detect and that our quality control studies have determined we can reliably report to you. This is known as the reporting limit. You can think of it as the smallest amount we can see of that contaminant or property of your water sample, so lower reporting limits are better.

I have one or more resealable bags in my kit – What do I put in which baggie?

Depending on which Xpress Water Test you order, you may find one or more bags in the sample collection kit. Use these to hold your water sample bottles when you pack them up and return them to us. It typically works well to put the bottle for microbiological analysis (bacterial testing) in one baggie and the botte(s) for chemistry testing in the other baggie.

What units do you use to report my results?

We use standard laboratory units to report the levels of each contaminant or property of your water sample to you. The section headers in your report will typically list the unit we are using. For characteristics that are reported in units specific to that property, we list those next to the reported value.

How long does it take to get my results?

Once we receive your water sample here at the laboratory, you should receive your results in three business days.
